French Ranch

Hidden Valley, California

Description

In 1923 Major Leigh H. French commissioned John Byers to design an adobe ranch house for his 2000-acre gentleman’s ranch in Hidden Valley.  The adobe home and its outbuildings were featured in California Arts & Architecture in 1929 and appeared in numerous cowboy movies over the years.

Partially destroyed by fire prior to the new owners’ purchase of the ranch, they were intent on the preservation of this historic property.  Great care was taken in the massing and detailing of the new extensions and in the reconstruction of the original portions of the house to preserve the essence of what John Byers intended in 1923.
